Proven History of Excellence

The Nemo Legacy

Nemo Tile was founded by the Sedrish Family in a storefront space on Jamaica Avenue in Queens, New York. For over three decades, they serviced contractors and neighborhood homeowners with all their floor and wall tile needs.

Jerry Karlin came on as Partner to Murray Sedrish in 1953 after a brief career in the liquor industry. A great businessman and a self-starter, Jerry saw growth potential in Nemo Tile. Under Jerry and Murray’s leadership, the business expanded to Long Island, the Bronx and their flagship location in the historic Flatiron District in NYC.

Nemo has remained in the Karlin family with Bert Karlin joining his father Jerry in 1974. Together the two helped pioneer the tile industry, going beyond the utilitarian 4x4 ceramic wall tile to large format porcelain, intricate mosaics and glass tiles. Their forward vision helped them land many timeless structures throughout Manhattan, including the Holland Tunnel, the MidTown Tunnel and countless hotels, arenas and residential buildings.

In 2002, Bert’s son, Matthew Karlin, kept the family tradition going when he decided to join Nemo Tile. He worked under Bert’s leadership while building out his own vision in areas such as launching Architecture and Design Sales, transforming the showrooms and expanding the Nemo territory. In 2014, Matthew took over as owner and CEO of Nemo Tile. He has built and continues to build upon the success of the company with the many strong relationships he has established within the Architectural, Interior Design, Real Estate and Construction industries.

Immersive Design Experience

Nemo Tile + Stone prides itself on our showrooms because these are designed to allow our clients to see possibilities and experience a hands-on approach. The displays are made to see the tiles in real life scenarios as well as showing different methods of installations so that the customer has an understanding of what they will get.

The Nemo showrooms staff is continuously trained to be knowledgeable in the products that we carry but also experienced in the means and methods of installation. Most importantly, our staff is there to listen to the needs of everyone that walks in the door and work in collaboration to help them come to the best solution for the design, budget and timeline.

At Nemo Tile + Stone, we welcome you to always utilize our showrooms as a workshop to put products together so that you can see your project come together.

  • Gramercy is a collection inspired by the history of the Manhattan neighborhood. Though made of porcelain, Gramercy’s color palette gives the collection the washed, faded look of a cement tile. The collection is applicable on walls and floors in residential, retail and hospitality settings and is available in a variety of solids and graphic patterns.

  • The handcrafted tradition the Casablanca Porcelain Collection recreates is a clever mix of art and design. The watercolor tones mirror the style of handmade tiles with high shade chromatic variation for a unique final installation. Iron and Whale, Asbury Park, NJ
