Project Spotlight: Café D’Avignon

Café D'Avignon is one of New York’s favorite local bakeries known for their exquisite execution of French and American pastry classics. They’re a small business with a serious passion for the craft of bread and pastry making. DeKalb Market Hall is one of the largest food and entertainment centers in New York City and now home to Café D’Avignon’s second location. Designed by Archipelagos Co., this location features Nemo Tile’s Industry Porcelain 3×12 Subway Tile in the color Lavagna.  The popular subway style dons a vintage look with a beautiful matte grey glaze creating a softer more industrial look. The undulated finish creates a great texture and the perfect backdrop to showcase their beautiful barista station! We connected with Rosella Albanese, Director of Operations at Café D’Avignon, to learn more about the design process for this awesome space! How did you come up with your overall design? We aimed to create a beautiful store that was designed with both customers and employees in mind. We wanted both groups to be able to interact efficiently and safely in the space. Also, we wanted to showcase the real baking we do that happens in the kitchen. We included elements we thought customers would enjoy. For instance, we love European-style stand up coffee bars, so we created this by adding a drink ledge around our espresso station. This corner becomes a crowded, friendly little hangout at certain times of the day. What were your main goals for the space? The main goal was to make a functional and efficient space that creates a nice working environment for our employees, and a user-friendly, easy place to get food for our customers. We needed to make it a simple space to showcase our baked goods with abundant displays on the counter so our customers could easily choose what they want. What is special about this DeKalb location? The two sidewalls that separate the front-of-house from the back-of house are really striking. When seen from the front of the store, guests get a peek at the real baking happening in the kitchen. On either side of the view into the kitchen are these two walls...one side has our plentiful bread display and the other side has a minimalist Café D’Avignon neon sign above our coffee bar. Be sure to stop by one of Café D’Avignon’s 3 locations in New York City for delicious freshly baked goods!   NEMO Products Used: Industry Porcelain 3×12 Subway Tile in Lavagna Designer: Archipelagos Co
