Project Spotlight: Elegantly Functional Mudroom
The key to a good mudroom design is to be able to get everything controlled at that point but incorporate high design that compliments the look of the whole house, according to Philip M Rossillo, RA Principal of PRDG architecture + design. The mudroom of this custom designed home is connected to the kitchen, the yard and the garage to help filter some of the messiness of an active young family.
“Part of it is straight function but we also wanted the mudroom to be a really nice thing to look at either from the kitchen or the exterior of the home,” says Philip.
Standing at the kitchen sink, you can look down the corridor and see that gorgeous arched window and beautiful backsplash. They wanted the backsplash to be pleasing to look at but not take away from the space using NEMO’s Handwritten ceramic tile in a diamond mosaic pattern in the color ‘unscripted.’
The idea was an articulation of millwork to create a little service station. The washer and dryer are concealed in their own cabinets while backpacks, jackets and shoes elegantly get squirreled away. The cubbies, hooks and bench seating help the family stay organized and the space houses a phone charging station, ironing board and sink.
This carved out niche becomes an outdoorsy annex to the home whose function is to control the outdoors.
The mudroom’s 32x32 Opus Porcelain Tile has a very modern but still an old-world feel. Even though it’s a manmade material, it has the texture of a natural stone and adds a natural ambiance to the room, almost like you are outside. The coloring of the floor tile is important to the overall design and it really helps to hide dirt. The homeowner loves it because “the boys come in from the pool and drop their wet towels and I never have to worry about the floor.”
