Project Spotlight: Iron Whale Restaurant

The Iron Whale, located on the Boardwalk in Asbury Park, is quite a departure from the previous ventures of the McLoone Restaurant Group. It features a rustic, yet still contemporary design in the spirit of seafarers, with prominent reclaimed wood, ropes, and gas lanterns.

The menu, by executive chef Charles Collins, features inventive takes on seafood including a "Taco Bar," hence the title "Whale". However, it also includes a wide selection of meat presentations, or "Iron".

With its Asbury Park Boardwalk location, outdoor ocean view dining is a strong feature of the Iron Whale. Indoors features an open kitchen, a fireplace, and a private meeting or party room. The Iron Whale is another exciting addition to the already resurgent Asbury Park scene and is open seven days a week for brunch, lunch and dinner year-round.

TSG Design LLC, a mother-and-daughter design team based in New Jersey, transformed Iron Whale Restaurant from a raw, commercial structure into a ship-inspired oasis. Terry Gierlatowicz and Sydney Mauhs’ services include interior design and decor, staging, and event decorating.

For the walls the beautiful, soft Nemo Tile Cape Cod in Eastham Matte was chosen. The Cape Cod Series draws inspiration from classic handmade ceramic subway tile, an irregular edge and a natural undulated surface convey a true artisan feel. Installed in a vertical stack pattern elongates the space, perfect for the high-top tables, and draws attention to the gorgeous light fixtures. The natural light really highlights the undulated tile surface, adding a soft movement effect to the space.

For the front dining area floor Casablanca Hex Palm 5.5x6.3 was chosen. The watercolor, handmade-look is the perfect selection for this marine themed restaurant. The handcrafted tradition the Casablanca Porcelain Collection recreates is a clever mix of art and design. The watercolor tones mirror the style of handmade tiles with high shade chromatic variation for a unique final installation. The added value of traditionally crafted products lies in the fact that no two pieces are alike, which is what Casablanca embodies with its distressed, handcrafted, high color variation look.

Stay tuned for next week’s Project Spotlight where we will take a closer look at other spaces in this beautiful restaurant!
