Purchasing Agent

Job Summary

Leading distributor of specialized building materials seeks to hire a Purchasing Agent based in their Manhattan headquarters. The Purchasing Agent must be knowledgeable in product, inventory control, logistics and vendor relationship to ensure we are maximizing profitability while fulfilling orders in a timely manner.

The purchasing team is a group of problem solvers with boundless curiosity about tile/stone and the logistics side of the business. We work in a faced paced environment and together, we build trust and connections with factories all over the world that produce mutual wins through spirited collaboration. Our team is the liaison between factories and clients, architect reps and interior designers.

We look for a team member who is an analytical thinker, technically minded, detail organized and problem solver. This team member must have the ability to think critically, using logistic and reasoning, to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Must have a strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with International factories (preferred) and has solid judgement in making decisions.


  • Verify accuracy of all purchase orders for quantity, size, pricing, and availability.
  • Estimate costs (International and Domestic) and prepare all necessary logistics to move materials.
  • Provide inventory control for select category of materials. Increase speed of inventory turnover, lower stock of days, determine which SKUs sell and reduce inventory of poor performing SKUs, recommend new SKUs to inventory, drives sales
  • Understand project schedules and ensure goods are delivered within the time constraints.
  • Keep information accessible by sorting and filing documents and technical support to entire sales rep and A&D team.
  • Keep abreast of changes effecting supply and demand for needed materials. Recommend alternatives means of supply when necessary
  • Liaise with A&D department and sales rep to address lead time of products, item sourcing or pricing inquiry of specific item
  • Support sales staff on daily basis with updates on open orders, ETA’s, ETD’s and changes to product and orders placed.
  • Keep abreast of changing treads in industry, participate in education opportunities, and review supplier websites.
  • Resolve all discrepancies and make corrections and adjustments in a timely manner
  • Track all purchase orders, back-orders and post updates in the ERP system
  • Prepare accurate bills of lading for domestic order and track them door to door providing all information necessary to our team
  • Maintain communications between all branch locations and suppliers
  • Build trusted relationships with suppliers, agents and team members


  • 2+ years’ experience in inventory and supply management – preferably in building materials or different industry (required)
  • Experience with purchasing/replenishment systems and inventory planning
  • Detail oriented, organized, able to set priorities and keep deadlines, change direction quickly & adapt to various work environments quickly.
  • Experience with domestic trucking & 3PL, global supply chain & different modes of transportation (This is a must)
  • Strong written communication and computer skills. Experience communicating with international suppliers a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills as well a keen attention to detail
  • Computer Programs: (included but not exclusive of) Microsoft Office Suite: Outlook, Word, Excel, Epicor/Prophet 21
